The following types of venues are legally required to display a QR poster, which is used with the NHS COVID-19 App:

  • Hospitality venues like bars, restaurants, hotels and cafes.
  • Tourism and leisure venues like museums, galleries, gyms and leisure centres.
  • Places of worship.
  • Close contact services.
  • Businesses where an event is taking place in a physical location.

These businesses need to display a QR code poster at the entrance which people who have downloaded the NHS COVID-19 App can scan.

People who have tested positive and have checked into certain locations will trigger an alert to anyone else who has been in that same location. The actual venue that triggered the alert will not be named.

The government has created guidance on how to create a QR code for your premises. Videos are also available on YouTube giving more information on the QR process and the new app.
